Are you centrists?

Accepted Answer

No. Centrism splits the difference. We follow the evidence. Sometimes that means bold, progressive action. Sometimes it means conservative restraint. Sometimes it means something no party has proposed. We're not looking for the middle — we're looking for what works.

Is this a real political party or just a website?

Accepted Answer

We're building toward a real, registered political party. Right now we're in the movement-building phase — developing our platform, growing our community, and preparing the organizational infrastructure to compete in elections. Every party started somewhere.

How is this different from the Forward Party, No Labels, or other third parties?

Accepted Answer

Most third parties define themselves by what they're against (partisanship) or by a vague appeal to moderation. We define ourselves by a methodology — evidence-based policy evaluation with honest acknowledgment of trade-offs. We also have a specific structural reform agenda: voting reform, ending gerrymandering, term limits, equalizing the influence of money in politics, and restoring civic education.

Don't third parties just spoil elections?

Under the current winner-take-all system, yes — that's a real risk. That's exactly why voting reform is our number one priority. Score voting eliminates the spoiler effect entirely. We're not naive about the structural barriers; we want to change the structure itself.

What does your tagline mean — 'Solutions that work, not sides that win'?

It means we care more about whether a policy actually helps people than about which party proposed it. The goal of politics should be solving problems, not scoring points.

We believe government should work for people. We believe in strength and empathy together. We believe leaders should hold themselves to a high standard while acknowledging they're human. We believe a house divided cannot stand. We believe nobody has all the answers. We believe policy should be judged by what it does, not what it promises. And we believe in each other — not naively, but practically.

Yes. Our platform isn't a list of conclusions — it's a framework for how to think about policy. We evaluate every issue through a rigorous process: define the problem, survey the evidence, map the trade-offs, stress-test against ideology, propose a solution, and define success metrics. What issues do you prioritize?

Our top priorities are structural reforms that make every other policy debate fairer and more honest: voting reform (score voting), reducing the outsized influence of money in politics, ending gerrymandering, term limits, and civic education. Fix the system first — everything else follows.

Why structural reform first? What about healthcare, climate, immigration?

Because the system is broken in ways that prevent good policy on any issue. When elections are pre-decided by gerrymandering, funded by billionaires, decided by plurality voting, and run by career politicians — you can't get good healthcare policy, good climate policy, or good anything policy. Fix the inputs, and the outputs improve across the board.

Check our Agenda and Issues pages. If we haven't addressed a specific issue yet, it's because we're still researching it. We'd rather say 'we don't know yet' than make a half-baked claim. That said, we welcome input — if there's an issue you want us to tackle, reach out.

Are you pro-life or pro-choice? Pro-gun or anti-gun?

We resist the framing. These issues are complex, and reducing them to binary positions is part of the problem. On every issue, we look at the evidence, acknowledge the trade-offs, and try to find approaches that maximize well-being while respecting individual rights. Our positions will be published as we develop them through our policy framework.

How can you claim to be evidence-based when values are subjective?

We don't think the divide between facts and values is as clean as people assume. If the worst possible misery for everyone is bad — and it is — then there are better and worse ways to organize a society. That's an empirical question, not just an opinion. What is score voting?

Accepted Answer

Score voting (also called range voting) lets you rate every candidate on a scale — say 0 to 5. The candidate with the highest average score wins. You don't have to pick just one. You can give your favorite a 5 and the lesser evil a 3 without hurting either.

How is score voting different from ranked choice voting (RCV)?

Accepted Answer

RCV asks you to rank candidates in order. Score voting asks you to rate them independently. Score voting is simpler to understand, simpler to count, and has better mathematical properties — it consistently elects the candidate closest to the median voter. RCV can produce counterintuitive results and is harder to audit.

Why not just support ranked choice voting since it has more momentum?

We'd take any reform over plurality voting. But if we're going to push for change, we should push for the best system, not just the most popular one. Score voting is simpler, more expressive, and eliminates the spoiler effect more completely than RCV.

Has score voting been tried anywhere?

Accepted Answer

Yes — in its simplest form. Approval voting, the two-level version of score voting, has been adopted by U.S. cities (St. Louis uses it today), and score ballots are common in organizational elections. More importantly, the mathematical and simulation evidence is strong: score voting consistently outperforms both plurality and RCV in electing broadly acceptable candidates.

Doesn't changing the voting system just benefit third parties?

Accepted Answer

It benefits voters. Under score voting, you can support a third-party candidate without 'wasting' your vote or spoiling the election for your second choice. The two major parties would also benefit — their candidates would need to appeal broadly rather than just mobilizing their base. Better incentives produce better candidates, period.

Why eliminate primaries?

Primaries are a two-stage filter that hands the first decision to a small, ideologically intense slice of each party. Closed primaries lock independents out entirely — that's roughly 40% of American voters with no say in who reaches the general election ballot. Partisan primaries also reward candidates who appeal to the base, not to the broader electorate they'll eventually have to govern. With score voting, you don't need primaries at all. Every candidate goes on one ballot, every voter rates them, highest-rated wins.

How would elections work without primaries?

Accepted Answer

All candidates — from every party and none — appear on a single general election ballot. Voters rate each one on a 0-to-5 scale. The highest-rated candidate wins. That's it. No two-stage filter. No party gatekeeping. No taxpayer-funded elections that exclude half the country. Candidates have to appeal to the whole electorate from day one, not just their party's base.

Don't parties have a right to pick their own nominees?

Accepted Answer

Private organizations can run whatever internal selection they want — that's up to them. What we object to is taxpayer-funded primary elections run by state governments that only let registered members of a specific party vote. If parties want to nominate candidates, let them do it privately, at their own expense. Public elections should be for every voter.

Didn't the Supreme Court rule that money is speech?

In Citizens United, the Court ruled that political spending is a form of protected expression. We disagree with that reasoning. Money amplifies speech — and when some megaphones are a million times louder than others, that's not free speech, it's purchased speech. But we don't need to overturn Citizens United to make progress. Small-dollar matching programs, transparency requirements, and stock trading bans for Congress are all achievable now.

What's a small-dollar matching program?

New York City matches small donations to candidates at an 8-to-1 ratio. So if you donate $50, the city adds $400. This lets candidates run competitive campaigns funded by regular people instead of wealthy donors. It works — NYC elections are now more diverse and more competitive.

Should members of Congress be allowed to trade stocks?

No. You can't impartially regulate industries you're personally invested in. Studies disagree on whether members of Congress actually beat the market — but suspiciously well-timed trades keep making headlines, and the conflict of interest is disqualifying either way. We support a full ban on individual stock trading by sitting members and their immediate families.

What is gerrymandering?

Gerrymandering is when the party in power draws electoral district maps to guarantee their own seats. They pack opposition voters into a few districts (so they win big in a few places but lose everywhere else) or crack them across many districts (so they never have enough to win anywhere). The result: most races are decided before anyone votes.

How bad is it really?

Accepted Answer

In 2022, only 36 of 435 House seats were rated true toss-ups (Cook Political Report). Incumbents win reelection at rates above 90%. When your seat is safe, you have no incentive to compromise, listen to voters outside your base, or even show up for your constituents. Gerrymandering is one of the biggest drivers of polarization.

What's an independent redistricting commission?

A body that draws electoral maps instead of the legislature. Members are selected through an independent process — not appointed by politicians. They use transparent criteria like compactness, contiguity, and community preservation. Several states (California, Arizona, Michigan) already use them with good results.

Can maps ever be truly 'fair'?

Accepted Answer

No map is perfect. Compactness can conflict with minority representation. Communities of interest don't always fit neat boundaries. But 'hard to do perfectly' isn't an argument for letting politicians rig the maps. We can define mathematical fairness criteria and build maps that are dramatically better than what we have.

How long should term limits be?

We propose 12 years maximum for Congress — six House terms, two Senate terms, or a combination. Long enough to develop real expertise. Short enough to prevent entrenchment. For the Supreme Court, we support 18-year staggered terms with a new appointment every two years.

Won't we lose experienced legislators?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and that's a real trade-off we acknowledge. Institutional knowledge matters. But right now, that knowledge is being used to entrench power, not to serve constituents. Lobbyists already have the institutional knowledge advantage — at least with term limits, they can't just wait out reformers.

Don't voters already have term limits? It's called elections.

In theory, yes. In practice, incumbent advantage is so massive — name recognition, donor networks, franking privileges, gerrymandered districts — that incumbents win at 90%+ rates. The system is designed to protect them. Term limits are a structural correction.

Doesn't this require a constitutional amendment?

Accepted Answer

For congressional term limits, yes. That's a high bar. But 87% of Americans support them (Pew, 2023) — this is one of the few genuinely bipartisan issues left. Supreme Court term limits may be achievable through legislation, as some legal scholars argue the Constitution doesn't explicitly require life tenure.

How bad is civic literacy in America?

Three in ten Americans still can't name the three branches of government — and that's after a decade of improvement. Only 40% can name even three of the five freedoms the First Amendment protects. Most couldn't pass the citizenship test we give to immigrants. This isn't trivia — it's the foundation of self-governance, and we treat it like an elective.

Won't civics education be politically biased?

Any curriculum will be accused of bias by someone. That's inevitable, and it's exactly why the focus must be on critical thinking and process — not conclusions. Teach students how to evaluate arguments on their merits, identify logical fallacies, and assess sources. Teach them how to think about politics, not what to think.

What about media literacy?

It should be a core curriculum component. Students should graduate knowing how to identify bias, distinguish reporting from opinion, understand how algorithms shape what they see, and evaluate evidence. In a world of misinformation, these are survival skills.

Can science really tell us what's morally right?

Accepted Answer

Science can tell us which policies increase human well-being and which increase suffering. If 'morally right' means anything, it has to connect to the well-being of conscious creatures. We're not saying science provides all the answers — we're saying honest inquiry, evidence, and clear reasoning are better tools than tradition, dogma, or ideology.

Isn't morality subjective?

The experience of suffering is subjective — it happens to individuals. But the fact that certain conditions reliably cause suffering is objective. If being burned alive is excruciatingly painful for anyone with an intact nervous system, that's an objective fact about the world. A science of morality doesn't require that values be purely 'objective' in some abstract philosophical sense — it requires that we can study well-being honestly and draw conclusions about better and worse ways to live.

Are you anti-religion?

No. We're against using any belief system — religious or secular — as a substitute for evidence when evaluating policy. Many religious traditions contain profound moral wisdom. But an argument for public policy has to rest on evidence everyone can examine — and that's as true for a secular ideology as for any faith tradition. We evaluate policy by outcomes, full stop.

Not at all. Many of our members are registered Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, or independents. Being a pragmatist is about how you think, not which box you check on a voter registration form. Think of us as a framework that works alongside — or eventually replaces — your current affiliation.

Fair question. We're not pretending this is easy. The structural barriers to third parties in America are enormous — ballot access laws, debate exclusion, media dismissal, the spoiler effect. That's why our first priority is changing the voting system itself. We're playing the long game, and we're building the infrastructure to sustain it.

Aren't you just another group of people who think they're smarter than everyone?

We don't think we're smarter. We think the process matters more than the person. Our framework is designed so that anyone — regardless of education, background, or political history — can apply it. The whole point is that you don't need to be an expert to evaluate policy honestly. You just need to be willing to look at evidence and acknowledge trade-offs.

Individual donors. We don't accept corporate PAC money, and we will publish our finances as the party grows. If we're going to advocate for leveling the playing field on political spending, we have to start with ourselves.

Then we say so. That's the whole point. If we only follow the evidence when it's convenient, we're just another partisan operation with better branding. We've committed to intellectual honesty, and that means being willing to take positions that make some of our own supporters uncomfortable.

Why should I trust you more than any other political party?

Don't trust us — evaluate us. That's literally what we're asking everyone to do with every political claim. Look at our positions. Check our evidence. Point out where we're wrong. We've built accountability into our framework: we define success metrics for every policy position, and if the evidence shows we got it wrong, we update. Name another party that does that.
